Elementary education

Elementary education is also primary education.Primary education and elementary education is typically the first stage of formal education, coming after preschool and before secondary education (The first four grades of primary school, Grades 1-4, are also part of early childhood education). Primary education usually takes place in a primary school or elementary school. In some countries, primary education is followed by middle school, an educational stage which exists in some countries, and takes place between primary school and high school college

                    Every state government in the United States regulates primary education, according to the United States Department of Education. Some states also supervise the curriculum, processes and standards of elementary schools to ensure students receive a quality education regardless of the school they attend. Most states require children to receive a primary education to learn basic concepts. According to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), providing children with this education has many positive effects, including:

Scope

An attempt has been made in the present article to review the progress made with regard to different components of Education for All (EFA), such as, Early Childhood Care and Education, Elementary Education and Adult Literacy and Continuing Education programmes. However, the focus of the article is on elementary education. The World Conference on EFA was held recently in Senegal (April 2000) and the previous one at Jomtien in 1990. Therefore an attempt has also been made to review the progress made between 1990 & 2000. Within the elementary education, different components such as, universal enrolment, access, retention and quality of education have been critically analyzed.
